John Sullivan is a candidate for mayor of Boston. The triumph of humanity over brutality in the case of Mrs. Bare at Beloit shows that there is some good among Populists. By the way, wasn't Mr. Fun-ston "mentioned" for governor some time ago? Don't let a good thing like that die for want of publicity.

Canovas murdered, bombs thrown at President Faure of France and the Sultan of Turkey almost daily we'd rather be president of plain old United States. Ed Ingle has a new buggy, and an old girl to ride in it. Rev. Stanert stayed with James Powell Saturday night, and preached at Media Sunday. Frank Barnhart will soon move back from Woodson county, as he does not like that country.

Since the rain corn is filling out and will be good considering the dry weather when it was Threshing will commence again this week. Wheat, oats and flax are good in quality but the yield is light. D. Griffith and wife started Saturday for their old home in New York, which they have not seen in forty years. We have a successful Sunday School.

Owen Turner and family started for southern Kansas, Oklahoma, and Newton county, to visit friends and have a little recreation, Everything is quiet at Excelsior but can't tell how soon a special meeting will be called to let a contract to draw water for school purposes or something else. James Tyner was elected District clerk. Under the management of the new board the school house is being cleaned, calcimined and painted inside betore school begins. Mr.

Ingle preached us an old fashioned sermon Sunday, his discourse being on "Believe and be Baptised," and that God is all love, and if we are punished it is our own fault. is the home of the watermelon kings. C. Gilliland was thrown from his buggy near Jerry Walker's last Monday evening, but not seriously hurt. Lee VanKuren, the station agent, and Ollie Barger and Herbert Hutches, section hands, are all in the Santa Fe hospital at Ottawa. Relief agent J. H.

Bagnall is in charge of the depot. glory. Will White, the famous author and editor, will deliver the opening address at "the State University this year. While everything is going Republican this fall, Duffee's candidacy will bring Kanwaka in line with a good majority. Duffee a Candidate.

We present this week the name of Lloyd Duffee, of Kanwaka township as a candidate for county surveyor: Mr. Duffee's candidacy has an auspicious beginning and will have a victorious ending. Of his qualifications nothing more need be said than that he is a graduate of the School of Engineering of the State University, class of '94. Of Lloyd himself, he is an honest, steady young fellow who has always been an uncompromising Republican. We are more pleased to see him enter the race than any other candidate before the people, because he is deserving and able, and because Kanwakee should be represented on the Republican ticket.

A Few of flany. The Baldwin Bee celebrated its birthday with a special issue. It was a splendid twelve-page paper. Ottawa Times. The Baldwin Bee celebrated its first birthday this week by getting out a very creditable trade issue.

Ottawa Republican. The Baldwin Bee is one year old. It has always been a creditable paper and the anniversary issue is to be commended. Lawrence World. The Baldwin this week issues a very creditable anniversary number, telling of the town and of the prosperity experienced there since the establishment of the paper.

Lawrence Journal. The Baldwin (Kansas) Bee was one year old with its last issue and in honor of the occasion issued a handsome anniversary number. The Bee is edited by Earl Knox, formerly in the employ of the Journal, and is fast coming to the front as a representative county paper. Hopkins (Mo.) The first anniversary number of the Baldwin Bee comes to our table this week in the form of a neat twelve page paper. The Bee is a progressive up-to-date paoer and is at the head of the local papers of Douglas county and deserves much.better support than it receives.

Lecompton Sun. BLACK JACK. A. T. Shepard and wife have returned from their visit to Osage county.

Mrs. Shannon has had typhoid fever but is getting better. Dr. Williams, of Baldwin, preached here Sunday. John Eiler will not farm the Black place next year.
