ABILENE, DICKINSON KANSAS, THURSDAY, MAY 27, 1897. HEMORIAL DAY. A. B. ROSE CO.

A Delightful Entertainment. One of the treats of a life time occurred last Tuesday evening when the Polymnia Club and their invited guests assembled at the Trinity Lutheran church to hear the lecture given by Mr. T. of this city, on the poems and songs of Robert Burns, which was beautifully illustrated by the singing of a number of the choicest songs of the great poet, by Mrs. Niesley, Misses Ellison and Ketcher-sid and M.

H. Speer, with Rev. Mr Bolger presiding at the piano, all of whom are so well known to an Abilene audience that it is almost needless to say that they rendered their parts in a highly pleasing manner. The lecture was a rare literary treat aud so thoroughly enjoyed by the large audience present that they longed for the speaker to continue as he drew bis address to a close. Mr.

Dewey is a man of great literary talent and. ability, and Abilene people are justly very proud of him and prove the same by turning out in large numbers to hear him when ever the' opportunity presents itself. And no less are we proud of the musical talent of our city and the friends of the Polymnia Club feel much indebted to them for the delightful entertainment which they had the pleasure of enjoying. This closes the clubs work for the seison. nONTO CARLO RESPECTABLE.

What is a suit worth anyway without style and durability? Quality is before everything with us. Good cloth, fine workmanship, right fit; settle these points first and then you're ready to talk price. No price is little enough for a poor suit, especially when you can get the best so reasonably here. There's real economy in buying such goods as the H. S.

M. guaranteed clothes. They fit, stay in shape and wear a long time. of money should depend on the requirements of business, and not on the caprice of congress, the edicts of rapacious syndicates, or the complaint vagaries of a renegade secretary of the treasury. "All the people of the United States are anreservedly in favor of honest money and the maintenance of public faith, 'credit and honor.

Many of them believe in the principles of a tariff lor revenue and for protection. But any measure whose justification is the contraction of currency, or which will reduce the price of wool, hides and other raw material by unrestrained competition, and increase the cost of coats and shoes by heavy duties on the manufactured product, will not be received with unmeasured enthusiasm by the republican farmers of the Mississippi valley. Rev. Crawford Delivered An Eloquent Address at the Opera House. On last Sunday afternoon memorial services were held at the opera house in this city and by the large crowd it iB plain to be seen that the true patriotic spirit of onr citizens is not waning.

The state was beautifully decorated with bunting, flags, flowers and portraits of Abraham Lincoln and Ulysses S. Grant. The ladies Relief Corps and G. A-R. attended in a body.

The large choir which was composed of some of our best singers rendered excellent music. Post Commander M. P. Jolley had charge of the services and after an anthem by the choir Rev. Dr.

Fulton of the Baptist church invoked the divine blessing which was touchingly full of patriotism. H. A. K.eve read the roll of honor and Rev. Dr.

Blayney of the Presbyterian church read for the scripture lesson IV chapter of Joshua from which chapter the speaker, Rev. A. Crawford of the Methodist church took his text. Mr. Crawford won for himself the reputation of being a strong and able speaker but his efforts on this occassion far surpassed the expectations of his audience.

He took his hearers back to the day of '61 when the gray haired men that occupied the front seats before him were "boys in blue" who so promptly responded to the call of the country's need and bravely marched forth to face death if necessary to save the universe. His praise and admiration for the soldiers was unparalleled and he spoke with such force and fervor that on several occ.assions the audience broke forth in hearty applause. As the speaker related hardships and discouragements the faithful and brave acts of our honored heroes, he did not forget to pay a high tribute of respect to the many thousand of brave true-hearted loyal mbthers and wives who took such an active part and by their many loving and noble deeds did so much for the encouragement and comfort of theirs and others loyed ones. We dont believe Ingalls is sincere in anything, but he comes pretty near the truth in the following letter written for the Cincinnati Enquiren Atchison, May 10, 1897. "It is obvious that if the greenback treasury notes, silver certificates and other paper obligations of the government are to be presented for redemption in srolri, reissued and presented again for redemption in. gold indefinitely, it will be necessary to have surplus revenues in gold or to sell more bonds for gold. Any private business conducted on such a scheme would consign its proprietor to the bankruptcy court, the almshouse, or the penitentiary, according to the caliber of his lawyer or the disposition of the jury. "The fatal infirmity of M. Dingley's theory is his assumption that the executive has the right to hold the greenbacks in the treasury, either to exchange for gold or for the purpose of bonds. "The statement of Dingeley emphasises the declarations of those who framed the financial plank in the St. Lauls platform, and their democratic allies, that 'sound meney' means ultimately the retirement of the greenbacks, the degradation of standard silver money, and the transfer of the legal tender function of gold coin alone. The volume of the currency should haye no more to say about the number of dollars to be issued than about the number of hats to be made, or the number of bushels of wheat to be ground, or the cumber of cattle and hogs to be raised.
