Cherry Parsons. Senator Jones, of Nevada, who re cently joined the populist party, says "I feel that the republican party is unalterably opposed to free coinage of silver at the American ratio of 16 to 1, or not without the consent of foreign governments who are to die tatc the ratio. I will state right now that I will never again vote for a president who does not favor free coinage." As the campaign progresses, it seems more evident that the populist part will have a good working ma jority in the legislature next winter, and that means another U. S. senator At the present time, Frank I taster seems to be the most available candi date for the place, although there are scores of populists who can fill with credit the scat made vacant by Sena tor Plumb.

The Emporia Gazette in speaking of the Spooner Comedy which plays here next week says: "The Whitely opera house was tilled from top to bottom, and people were standing up in the aisles and on the sides. It was a splendid tribute to the Spooners and showed the appreciation In which they aie held by the people of Emporia From the time the curtain went up until it descended at the last act, the audienc enjoyed the humor, the pathos, the mingled comedy and sentiment which make "Esther.s fitting play for the opening night. Tell it not in Abilene and publish it not in the streets of Salina, lest the heathen rage at our prosperity. Minneapolis Messenger. Dick (Blue, republican candidate for congress, is extremely solicitous about the ''business of the country" and the rjghts of eapital though he hasn't capital enough of his own to start a peanut stand. "The bueiness of the country," he said at Hutchison, talking against the workingmen's bide of the late strike "cannot wait for every Tom, Dick, and Harry to settle all his petty disputes and the disputes of all his brethren in every state and city in the country," He is one of those ignoramuses who forget that the whole business of the country depends on thu welfare of that class of people we call the producers. Railroad bondholders and bankers do not belong to that class.

Advocate Those of our readers who are acquainted with Cbas. Young, the nurseryman who lives just west of the city, will be interested in the following account given of his son's work while in tbeWesleyan University atSalina. The republican of that town says: "A young man about twenty years of age by the name of Arthur Young came to the college last year in May, taking a commercial course, short hand, physics and German. At the end of twelve weeks he had completed the whole course in the commercial department and was able to write 150 words in short hand, passsd a creditable examination in physics and German, at the same time doing Janitor work enough to pay his tuition. Prof.

Roach says the story of the young man's attainments seems almost in credible, and during his thirty years or bcbool work he has never seen the young man equal for study.
