SNOWS AT TOPEKA. Four Inches of It There This Morning. Great Damage Done. TOPERA, Oct. 17, day's snow storm is unprecedented in the history of Kansas.

The sight of many inches of snow on the ground with the trees in full green leaf as in July was never before seen here. When people awoke this morning and looked at the landscape they rubbed their eyes and looked again. The 17th of October in sunny Kansas with the ground and the west side of every house, tree, pole or anything else covered with snow and sleet and the snow still falling is an astounding sight. The rain that had been falling all day Sunday turned into snow at 3 o'clock this 1 morning. The 1 wind has been from the west and the windward side of every house, tree and telegraph pole was covered with snow and sleet all inch thick.

The wires were covered with sleet, making them from all inch to two inches in diameter. DAN KREIDER DEAD. A Stormy Career Ended at Divide Colorado Saturday Night. A telegram to Fred Wilcox from W. P.

Seeds, at Cripple Creek, yesterday announced the death at Divide, Saturday night, of Dan Kreider, a well-known character, formerly of Abilene. No particulars were given but as Dan has been employed as a brakeman on the Midland Terminal railroad it is conjectured that he met death in an accident. Dan was raised in and about Abilene and everybody knows him. Ile was about 28 years of age and has had rather a checkered career and was always in trouble of some kind. Notwithstanding this fact Dan was a good -hearted boy and was generous and true to his friends.

ilis mother lives at Ogden, Utah and word was telegraphed her this morning of the death of her boy. He also has a sister, Mrs. Horton Wilcox, living in Abilene. Death at Solomon. SOLOMON KAS, 17, 98-Harry flopkins, the 7 year-old son of J.

A. Hopkins, republican candidate for probate judge, died here yesterday morning of throat trouble. He was a bright little fellow and well liked. Funeral services were held this morning. How to Prevent Croup.

A Flurry of Snow Early this Morn ing.

Saturday was a warm day with a high wind from the south, but along in the night the wind veered to the north and began to howl like winter. The sky was soon cloudy and Sunday broke wet and cold. The drizzling continued all day and night and this morning with the thermometer at 31 degrees above zero a little flurry of snow came to remind l1s that winter was on the way. Overcoats are being put in use and everything smacks of winter. The high school was dismissed today because the heating apparatus could not be used. Arthur Holland Taken. This morning at 4 o'clock. Arthur Orwin Holland died at his home at Ninth and Olive streets.

lle had been sick with malarial fever for about three weeks and after a heroic struggle finally had to give up. This is a particularly sad death as Arthur was the third member of the family to go within' the past three Years and the second within a few weeks, his sister having died of the same disease only a short time since. Ilis father, C. C. Holland, and two sisters, Nora and Ary, also a brother, survive him.

Both of his sisters teach school in the neighborhood Abilene and his brother. J. C. Holland, is principal of the schools al Leoti, Wichita county. The deceased came here fom Ne braska at the time of his sister's death, and remaining that he might be company for the bereaved their lonliness, and now he ha: gone and leaves them lonely indeed.

Gus Kubach left for Nebraska to join her husband who went to that state some day last week. -The Solomon Tribune says that Oscar "Steil" of Abilene, was in that town last week distributing advertising matter for G. C. "Steil" and Co. -Ira Rogers and family, formerly residents of Abilene, but now living near Carthage, came in for a several weeks' visit with residents.

Ira is well pleased with Missouri and is prospering. -Eug. De Kreist, who is proprietor of the largest barrel-organ factory in the United States, is here from North Tonawanda, N. Y. Mr.

De Kreist is spending a few days with Mr. Charles W.
